Checklist
The following list is designed to help families manage all the requirements associated with the loss of a loved one and to provide a reference point for the organisation of the funeral. If you have any queries about any of the items listed below, or need any help in addressing any of them, please contact us and we will be happy to assist.
- Contact your GP as soon as possible to enable him/her to issue a Medical Certificate of Death. If your loved one has died suddenly, it is likely that the local Coroner will be involved.
- Register the death of your loved one with the local registrar - as well as the Death Certificate, the Registrar will need to see the deceased's birth certificate, NHS medical card (if available) and marriage certificate (if available)
- As soon as you feel ready, contact your chosen funeral director to begin to make arrangements for the funeral of your choice
- Consider the music, hymns and readings that you want for the service, whom should be invited to deliver the eulogy, what floral tributes would like to specify and what (arrangements need to be made for a gathering of mourners after the service (if you are holding one)
- Inform the family and friends of the deceased of his/her passing, and advise them of the funeral arrangements once confirmed
